Spaying and Neutering for Dogs and Cats in Smyrna

Spaying and neutering dogs and cats are widely considered the best solution to preventing the overpopulation of strays, but these procedures also offer many health and behavioral benefits to their recipients. Here in Smyrna, we highly recommend pet spay and neuter surgeries for most of our patients. The surgery not only improves their quality of life but can also extend their lifespan. Since not all pets are the same, some may be susceptible to certain health conditions. We will thoroughly examine your pet and discuss their options before we recommend spaying or neutering.

When to Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered

We prefer to wait until pets are at least 6 months of age before spaying and neutering, but we may wait an extra couple of months for larger breed dogs, who take longer to reach sexual maturity. Our veterinarians will not perform cat or dog neuter or spay surgeries on pets any younger than 6 months unless medically indicated. Once we have examined your pet and determined that spaying or neutering will be in their best interest, we will let you know when you should schedule their surgery.

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering Dogs and Cats

Both male and female cats and dogs can benefit from spaying and neutering in the following ways:

  • Eliminates heat cycle and spotting
  • Decreases roaming tendencies
  • Reduces the risk of developing mammary tumors
  • Eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra)
  • Diminishes the likelihood of aggressive behavior
  • Curtails marking and spraying
  • Decreases roaming tendencies
  • Eliminates the risk of developing testicular cancer
  • Prevents problems of the prostate
  • Reduces mounting of objects/other animals

Determining Whether Spaying or Neutering is Right for Your Pet

Since we do not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all philosophy when it comes to treating our patients, we understand that spaying and neutering is not always the best course of action for some dogs and cats. Certain breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, can experience problems later in life. Other pets may have conditions that make undergoing even a routine surgery too risky. That is why we work with pet owners individually to decide on the best treatments for their loved ones.

If you would like to schedule a consultation to discuss the characteristics of cat and dog neuter and spay surgeries and whether spaying or neutering is right for your pet, please give us a call at (770) 333-9030 or book an appointment online.
