Pet Diagnostics in Smyrna
A nose-to-tail physical examination of your pet can tell us a lot of things about their health, but it cannot always show us the bigger picture. When we need to see what is going on with their bones and other internal structures, we have to go a step further and utilize our pet diagnostics capabilities. At Windy Hill Veterinary Hospital, diagnostics are crucial for the detection of tumors, bone fractures, parasite infestations, and more. Whether your pet requires pre-surgical testing, has an underlying illness, or seems injured, our imaging and laboratory tools can help us find answers and identify the appropriate course of treatment.
Laboratory Testing
With our in-house diagnostics lab, we can run a variety of tests on blood, urine, and fecal matter and obtain those results within 20 minutes. Tests we can perform include CBC (complete blood count), blood chemistry, urinalysis, fecal flotation, heartworm test, and feline leukemia/feline immunodeficiency virus test. For more complex testing, we send samples out to IDEXX laboratories. Results for these tests take about 1-3 days.
Digital X-Ray and Ultrasound
Compared to film X-rays, digital X-ray images are much clearer and go further in helping us study the condition of your pet’s musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. This technology also enables us to produce images more quickly and even share them via email with outside specialists if necessary.
Ultrasound involves the use of soundwave echoes to develop images of the body’s internal structures, including the heart and abdominal organs. Like X-ray, this procedure is completely non-invasive and painless. Ultrasound can help us detect tumors, monitor pregnancies, and evaluate the condition of organs by studying their shape, texture, and function.
Electrocardiography
To detect or monitor conditions such as heart disease, electrocardiography (EKG) allows us to evaluate the heart’s electrical activity via the attachment of electrodes over a period of time. As with digital X-rays and ultrasounds, EKG is non-invasive and painless. Electrocardiograms usually take only a few minutes, and pets do not need to be sedated for the procedure.
