How Cat and Dog Vaccinations Work

Just as they do with people, cat and dog vaccines contain antigens and a killed or modified form of the virus against which it is designed to protect. When injected into the body, the antigens induce an immune response, along with the production of antibodies to fight off the virus. Later, should your pet ever come into contact with the real virus, their immune system will be well-equipped to recognize and fight off the intruder.

Choosing the Appropriate Vaccines for Your Pet

Puppies and kittens 6-8 weeks old usually receive a series of distemper vaccinations (4 given 3 weeks apart) until they reach at least 16 weeks old. Once the series is complete, both dogs and cats will be re-vaccinated every 1-3 years depending on risk. The rabies vaccine is given at approximately 16 weeks of age and can be given yearly.

Your veterinarian will want to talk with you about your pet’s life at home—their environment, socialization with other animals, frequency of travel, etc. We also take breed, size, and overall health history into consideration when selecting the vaccines they will need.
